Character & Intellect (#002)

#002 – Character & Intellect

Character and Intellect: the two poles of our capacity; one without the other is but halfway to happiness. Intellect sufficeth not, character is also needed. On the other hand, it is the fool’s misfortune, to fail in obtaining the position, the employment, the neighborhood, and the circle of friends that suit him.

These two items, character and intellect, are the pillars of being a coach.  You can certainly have a career that is successful and rewarding without one of these.  However, you will most likely not have a standout career or a solid coaching legacy without them both.  Character requires intellect to help you learn and stay on the path you have chosen.  Intellect requires the character to make sure you communicate and represent, in a positive manner, the knowledge you have gained.  These two pillars should be at the core of every coaching philosophy.

This blog series is based on the book “The Art of Worldly Wisdom” by Balthasar Gracián.  This book was written for advice on how to achieve personal and professional success.  The goal of this blog series is to visit the points of wisdom and put them in the spotlight of the coaching and education lens.
